What Is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterised by stiffness, pain and a significant loss of range of movement in the shoulder joint. It typically develops gradually and can persist for months or even years if the underlying cause is not properly addressed.

Most people experience frozen shoulder in three stages. It begins with a painful phase where movement becomes increasingly uncomfortable, progresses to a frozen phase where stiffness is at its worst, and eventually moves into a thawing phase where movement slowly begins to return. However, without addressing the root cause, full recovery can take considerably longer than it needs to.

What Causes Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder does not develop in isolation. In the majority of cases, it is driven by deeper postural and biomechanical issues that have placed the shoulder joint under prolonged stress and restricted its natural range of movement.

Addressing these underlying dysfunctions is essential for a full and lasting recovery. Effective frozen shoulder treatment has to start here, not with the symptoms.

Common contributors include:

01.

Rounded shoulders and a forward head posture that compress the shoulder joint

02.

Thoracic spine stiffness that limits how the shoulder blade and arm can move

03.

Muscular dysfunction in the core which limits mobility and stability of the ribcage and thoracic spine

04.

Compensatory movement patterns developed after injury or surgery that alter how the shoulder functions over time

Our Approach

How We Address Frozen Shoulder

At Bristol Biomechanics, we use Functional Patterns, a methodology built around the fundamental movements of the human body: standing, walking, running and throwing. Rather than focusing solely on the shoulder, we assess how your entire body moves and identify the chain of postural and movement dysfunctions that are contributing to your condition.

Our approach includes:

01

Postural and Gait Assessment

We begin with a thorough analysis of your posture and movement to identify exactly where the imbalances are occurring and how they are affecting the mechanics of your shoulder.

02

Myofascial Release (MFR)

We teach you targeted self-massage techniques to release the tight and restricted tissue around the shoulder, chest, upper back and neck, restoring mobility and preparing the joint for corrective exercise.

03

Corrective Exercise

Using Functional Patterns corrective exercise, you will learn to engage your shoulder, scapula and upper body as a connected system, gradually restoring range of movement and taking the excess load off the shoulder joint.

04

Lifestyle and Wellbeing Support

We take a holistic approach covering nutrition, sleep quality, stress management and reducing systemic inflammation, all of which play a role in joint health and the speed of your recovery.
