Postural Assessment
in Bristol
Your posture is not just about how you look. It is a direct reflection of how your body is functioning and a powerful indicator of where pain and dysfunction are likely to develop.
What is a Postural Assessment?
A postural assessment is a structured evaluation of how your body is aligned and held at rest. Rather than focusing on individual joints or isolated areas of pain, a comprehensive postural assessment looks at the whole body as a connected system, examining how each area relates to and influences the others.
At Bristol Biomechanics, our postural assessment in Bristol is a core part of everything we do. It forms the foundation of our understanding of each client and informs every decision we make about their programme. Without a thorough postural assessment, any corrective work is essentially guesswork.
What Does a Postural Assessment Involve?
Our postural assessment is a thorough full-body evaluation carried out by one of our certified Functional Patterns practitioners. We examine your alignment from the front, side and back, assessing the relationship between all the major structures of the body.
The findings from your postural assessment are then combined with a full gait analysis to give us the most complete and accurate picture possible of how your body is functioning.
We look at factors including:
01.
The position of your head and neck relative to your shoulders and spine
02.
The alignment and symmetry of your shoulders and shoulder blades
03.
The curvature of your thoracic and lumbar spine
04.
The position and tilt of your pelvis and how it influences the rest of the body
05.
The alignment of your hips, knees and ankles and how load is distributed through the lower body
06.
Any visible asymmetries that suggest one side of the body is carrying more load than the other
What Can a Postural Assessment Reveal?
Posture is one of the most informative indicators of musculoskeletal health available to us. The way your body is held at rest reflects the cumulative effect of your movement habits, lifestyle and history of injury or dysfunction over time.
For many clients, a postural assessment provides the first clear explanation they have ever received for why they are in pain. It transforms an abstract problem into something visible, understandable and correctable.
A postural assessment can reveal:
- The structural patterns driving chronic pain in the back, neck, shoulders, hips and knees
- Muscular imbalances that are placing certain joints under excessive and sustained load
- Compensatory patterns that have developed as a result of old injuries or inefficient movement habits
- Asymmetries in the pelvis and spine that increase the risk of injury and limit performance
- The postural habits that are contributing to headaches, migraines and nerve pain
