What Causes Back Pain?

Back pain can be the result of many different factors. From past injuries, structural imbalances you may have been born with, faulty movement patterns ingrained over time, or all of the above.

Poor posture, muscular imbalances and inefficient movement patterns place excessive and uneven load on the spine. Over months and years, this compression builds and eventually, the body signals that something is wrong. That signal is pain.

We assess your posture and movement to identify exactly which imbalances are present and how to correct them.

Common imbalances that contribute to back pain include:

01.

A forward head posture that shifts load onto the lower back (kyphosis)

02.

Pelvic imbalances that create uneven stress across the lumbar spine

03.

Weakness in the core muscles that support and stabilise the spine

04.

Restricted mobility in the hips and thoracic spine, forcing the lower back to compensate

How We Address Back Pain Differently

Most approaches to back pain treatment focus on the site of pain. We focus on the bigger picture, how the body works as a system of connected parts.

At Bristol Biomechanics, we use Functional Patterns, a training methodology built around the fundamental movements of the human body: standing, walking, running and throwing. By analysing how you move as a whole, we can identify the specific imbalances and dysfunctions that are driving your pain.

Our movement-based approach includes:

01

Postural and Gait Assessment

We begin with a thorough assessment of your posture and movement. This allows us to pinpoint exactly where the breakdowns are occurring and why your back is under strain.

02

Myofascial Release (MFR)

Before corrective exercise can be effective, tight and restricted soft tissue needs to be addressed. We teach you targeted self-massage techniques that release tension, restore mobility and prepare your body for movement.

03

Corrective Exercise

Using Functional Patterns corrective exercise, you will learn to engage your body as a connected system, integrating muscles in a way that reduces spinal compression, restores symmetry and builds genuine, lasting strength.

04

Lifestyle and Wellbeing Support

Chronic back pain is rarely just a physical issue. We take a holistic approach, covering nutrition, sleep quality, stress management and reducing systemic inflammation, all of which play a significant role in your recovery.
