Posture Correction
in Bristol
Poor posture is one of the most common and most overlooked drivers of chronic pain. We help you understand what is causing it and correct it for good.
What Is Poor Posture?
Poor posture is not simply a matter of slouching or sitting badly. It is the result of a complex set of muscular and skeletal imbalances, movement dysfunctions and habitual patterns that have developed in the body over time. These patterns alter the way the skeleton is formed, placing uneven and excessive load on the joints, muscles and soft tissue throughout the body.
Most people are unaware of their postural habits until pain appears. By that point the patterns are usually well established and require a structured and consistent approach to correct.
Common postural issues we see include:
01.
Forward head posture, where the head sits in front of rather than directly above the spine
02.
Rounded shoulders that compress the chest and restrict upper body movement
03.
An anterior pelvic tilt that increases the curve of the lower back and loads the lumbar spine
04.
A flat back posture that removes the natural curves of the spine and reduces its ability to absorb load
05.
Spinal asymmetries where one side of the body carries significantly more load than the other
How Poor Posture Affects Your Body ?
The effects of poor posture extend far beyond discomfort whilst sitting at a desk. The position in which your body is habitually held determines how load is distributed across every joint and muscle in your body during every activity you perform.
A forward head posture, for example, does not just strain the neck. It rounds the shoulders, compresses the thoracic spine, restricts breathing mechanics and alters the position of the pelvis. Similarly, a pelvic imbalance does not just affect the lower back. It changes the mechanics of the hips, knees and ankles and creates a chain of compensations that work their way up through the entire body.
This is why so many people find that addressing pain in one area provides only temporary relief. Without correcting the underlying postural patterns, the body simply continues to load itself inefficiently and pain returns. Lasting posture correction requires a whole-body approach, and that is exactly what we provide.
Our Approach
How We Correct Your Posture
At Bristol Biomechanics, our posture specialists use Functional Patterns, a methodology built around the fundamental movements of the human body: standing, walking, running and throwing. By assessing your posture and full movement cycle, we identify exactly which patterns are driving your postural dysfunction and build a programme designed to correct them from the ground up.
Our approach includes:
01
Postural and Gait Assessment
We begin with a thorough analysis of your posture and movement to identify exactly where the imbalances are occurring and how they are affecting your body as a whole.
02
Myofascial Release (MFR)
We teach you targeted self-massage techniques to release the tight and restricted tissue that is holding your body in poor postural positions, restoring mobility and preparing it for corrective exercise.
03
Corrective Exercise
The posture correction exercises we use are not generic stretches or isolated movements. Using Functional Patterns corrective exercise, you will learn to engage your body as a connected system, gradually restoring proper alignment, symmetry and balance across the entire body and building the muscular support needed to maintain good posture naturally.
04
Lifestyle and Wellbeing Support
We take a holistic approach covering sleep quality, nutrition, stress management and reducing systemic inflammation, all of which contribute to how your body holds itself and recovers from the effects of poor posture.
